Shih Tzu Chihuahua Mix ,also known as Shi-chi

Shih Tzu Chihuahua mix is a cross of Shih Tzu and Chihuahua also known as Shi-chi or Chi Tzu. It’s a small dog, at about 10 inches tall and 5 to 16 pounds weight. The life expectancy of this crossbreed is 12 to 15 years. Shi-Chi puppies usually cost around $500 to $1000.

I’ve put together a list of what I think are the important things to know about this mixed breed, so take a look!

Physical traits

Shih Tzu Chihuahua Mixes are toy dogs, as they come from two toy dog breeds. They tend to measure no more than 10 inches tall (25.5cm) and weigh between 3-9 lb (1.3-4 kg). They usually have a round head, and they can either have ears that are erect or that hang down. The Shichi can come in various colors, including:

  • Black
  • Brown
  • Brown and white
  • Cream
  • White

Depending on their genetic distribution, their coat can be short like the Chihuahua’s, or it can be long and silky and sometimes slightly wavy.

If your dog has long hair, you may choose to clip her coat to make it easier to maintain. This coat would only require brushing once a week. If you prefer it long, however, you will need to brush her three times a week to avoid tangles and matting.

The good news is that Shichis are usually minimal shedders, so you won’t have to worry about vacuuming the carpet every day or getting your clothes covered in hair before a date!

Temperament

Small dog, big personality

Despite their size, these little dogs are lively! They need at least twenty minutes of vigorous exercise a day, whether it’s a brisk walk alongside you, or off-leash playing and running.

Ideally, they should have two walks a day. You could take her for a more energetic walk or jog in the morning, and a shorter, gentler walk of ten minutes in the evening.

The Shih Tzu Chihuahua Mix is also very playful, so get her some toys for her to play with at home, and you’ve got another way of burning off her pent-up energy!

Here’s a video you can’t resist – check out this adorable and playful 9-week-old Shichi pup:

She loves affection

The Shih Tzu Chihuahua Mix loves to be with her family and adores attention. I don’t recommend this dog with very young children, though, as she is small and delicate and could be hurt in rough play.

Don’t be fooled by your Shichi’s size… she can be feisty!

Shichi

She can be protective, and you should be careful this doesn’t turn into possessiveness, which invariably leads to aggression. You might think it’s cute or funny at first, but it can, in fact, become a problem.

Make sure you socialize her with people and other dogs as a puppy and don’t go overboard with letting her jump up or sit on your lap at all times. This can result in over-attachment, insecurity and the feeling that she needs to protect you.

Training your Shichi

Training a Shichi takes perseverance. Make it simple for her by ensuring that you and all your family members use the same words when teaching or eliciting a desired behavior. It is also important to always use positive reinforcement for good behavior, in the way of treats and lots of praise. This will make training sessions enjoyable for her, and she is more likely to stay focused.

If you’re a first-time dog owner, take her to puppy classes to get some help and support. The benefit of classes is twofold, as you will be socializing your puppy at the same time. It will also give you a routine to stick to and motivation to keep it up at home (just think of the certificate!).

Feeding your Shichi

She won’t need more than 1/2 cup – 1 cup of high-quality dog food a day. Divide this into two portions and give her one in the morning and one in the evening.

Health

The Shih Tzu Chihuahua Mix is usually healthy and has a lifespan of 12-15 years. There are some health conditions she could inherit from her parents, which include:

  • Patellar Luxation (kneecap dislocation)
  • Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
  • Eye problems (ulcers, cataracts, epiphora)
  • Obesity
  • Respiratory problems

Before you buy your dog, you should ask the breeder about your Shichi’s parents’ health; a reputable breeder will be able to provide you with this information.

Conclusion

So there you have it. The Shichi is really is a personality, isn’t she?

She’s:

  • Small
  • Energetic
  • Playful
  • Affectionate
  • Protective of her family
  • A minimal shedder
  • Not suitable for young children

Despite her size, she still needs at least 20 minutes of intense exercise a day and lots of play.

We adopted our girl last year. She is estimated to be six years old. We love her sassy personality and expressiveness. She moans and groans at us when we aren’t “petting her right” or if we are bugging her. Totally the sweetest dog with the best personality we’ve ever had.

I have a shih tzu pug chihuahua mix he’s a beautiful little dog. I’ve had him for seven years since he was born. He was bred intentionally for me as a life companion and a emotional therapy dog for me. He is the sweetest Smartest little dog I’ve ever had. He is a handsome dog.

We got ours early (5-6 weeks) were told he was 7 weeks. We bottle fed and finished the weining process. He’s definitely a handful, and his name (Cujo) fits. He keeps my boxer on his toes and is mouthy as all get out.

  • Bev says:

Just picked ours up a few days ago she pisses and poops everywhere, she has this odour on her we cannot get rid of the matter what we used to bathe her.
She’s already three months old does not respond to a name yet hoping this all comes around time.

My little ShiChi is 12 weeks old now and is very bright, knows her name, can follow a ball and bring it back to me. My other dog has not been a bit impressed with the new arrival!!!

Our puppy is 5 mo old & was so tiny when we got her at 6 wks. She has grown so much between 4-5 mo old. She is longer & taller but still only less than 5 lbs. She loves people, belly rubs, giving kisses & gnaw on you. She eats her food so fast in the morning & is ready to play for a bit. She sleeps a while in the day time but gets super wild at night before bed time.

I have a 9 year old Shichi named Rascal. He was badly abused in his first two years because he was with a family who didnt understand his ways. He fell many times and I finally just brought him home with me. Rascal has been such a handful and he was so afraid of everything in life. I have him to where I can hold him and play and have treats but he will never go outside. He falls tonthe ground and shivers until his teeth rattle. I dont do that now but would appreciate any tips to make him comfortable and exercise. I dont have a tonne of cash so i am on my own in this. I love him so so much and just need some tips on making him even happier.
Thanks for any input as he deserves a calm, fun retirement with me!

My Shih Tzu/Chihuahua is 9 years old “Ron”. He has been the greatest buddy to me. He does want alot of attention but I always give it to him. Also likes to play with his toys.

  • Denise Bauer says:

Hello there, We also have a 9yr old female. She’s a Shih Tzu and Chihuahua mix. And when we got her was also petrified of everything. What we did and what I would suggest to try if you would like I’d take him for a walk in your arms, either around or down the block, or wherever as long as it is outside. And we have a yard now however when we got her and what we did this this with was the out front porch area. We blocked it off with a gate. Also now have a back area blocked off. Like a full square area. And we would work our way or start at the door area. Little by little giving treats, playing, love and affection the whole time, work our way step by step out a little further each time (sometimes we only made it to the same spot for a period of time) but always let him know he can get into your arms but also if so put him back down in the same spot. (Training treats!!!!! Are a life saver for sure, And or mini or regular broken up cookies, lol) Also after you walk him outside in your arms like the 3rd-4th time put him down at the door with the door open to go in. This way he will of course want to go in, but will have to walk a step or two or an area of such to get in. Again going a little further (within the already gated or blocked off Safe area for him) everytime you do so. And if you have pads or a set rug or turf area that he goes to the bathroom on try putting that out in that area as well. Could be after he’s already use to actually being outside or from the beginning. But that will be easier to train him to go outside. So after first time she actually went outside if when we started to train her to ring the bell (we have it hanging off doorknob to her height so she could use her nose or paws) to go to bathroom outside. Most of the time she would ring it and go a couple feet out and go pee for long period of time from holding it in so long. Now we are able to take her for a short walk whenever we want too and it definitely worked on house training her completely with the bell. I hope that some of or any of this helps you with your baby, and if you have any questions or interested in knowing anything else of our baby or story to her, do feel free to ask

Why the name Rascal? seems bit of a not good name for a dog.

I got my Shichis from a family that was giving them away. She has so much energy and all her pack is bonding with her and she has plenty of playtime. I absolutely adore her. I take her to places that have other animals and people.
