Pitbull Chihuahua Mix also known as Pihuahua or ChipitPitbull Chihuahua Mix is a cross of chihuahua and pitbull which is also known as Pihuahua or Chipit. It’s a medium size at about 15 to 20 inches tall, bigger than a pure Chihuahua, and smaller than a Pitbull. The life span of this crossbreed is around 10 to 13 years.

However, crossbreeds have their pros and cons, and in this article, I’m going to explain to you more about this unique dog, about what makes her so special, and what she needs to thrive.

A Chipit takes the best from her parents

This dog is a crossbreed between a Chihuahua and the American Pit Bull Terrier and, in most cases, she’s the best of both worlds, being intelligent, social, courageous, and protective.

Thanks to her nice personality, a Chipit is easy to train and, unless she has too much of Chihuahua parent in her, you can obtain great results with positive reinforcement, without needing to join a professional training school. Start potty training and basic obedience when she’s about 6 weeks old and never allow your puppy to cross limits.

I must warn you though that it’s going to be hard to say no to such a small ball of cuteness:

Chipits don’t usually inherit the Chihuahua’s watchdog abilities, so there’s little chance you’ll have to deal with excessive barking or with aggression towards strangers.

You can’t know how large your dog is going to grow, or what she’ll look like

As with all crossbreeds, a Chipit’s appearance as an adult is unpredictable, because she can inherit any of her parents’ physical characteristics. So, if you’re expecting to have a toy or small dog, then this crossbreed is not the right pick.

A Pitbull Chihuahua Mix weighs between 15 and 35 pounds (6.5-16 kg) and can grow anywhere between 15 and 20 inches tall (38-50 cm).

Size is not the only unknown characteristic your dog will have. You’ll have to keep an open mind about colors and the type of coat, too. Things are clear when both parents have short coats, but if the Chihuahua parent has a long coat, then there’s a chance your puppy will inherit it.

When it comes to colors, a Chipit’s coat can be a combination of any of the following:

  • black;
  • tan;
  • (dark) brown;
  • chocolate;
  • gray;
  • golden;
  • white.

You’ll find a great companion in a Pitbull Chihuahua Mix

Pitbull Chihuahua Mix These dogs love their owners, and when living with a family they tend to create a special bond with one of the members, usually the one who spends the most time with them. This makes them suitable for both people living alone and families.

They’re loyal, affectionate, and playful, and are generally great with children of all ages. However, if you have small kids you should watch them closely, as many of them don’t understand how to behave around dogs, and may harm your pet.

The problem with this dog is that you’ll have to spend a lot of time with her. She hates being alone, and when left by herself for too long she can develop separation anxiety and depression. Crate training can be useful, but don’t use the dog cage for more than four hours a day.

Grooming is generally fast, and fun

Both the Chihuahua and Pitbull area easy to maintain, so this crossbreed is the dream of every busy pet parent. As they shed moderately, you’ll be able to keep pet hair under control with regular brushing and a good vacuum cleaner. Grooming won’t occupy most of your time, as long as you keep a consistent schedule:

    • brush her coat for 10-15 minutes, three times a week, to keep it smooth and glossy;
    • if your dog has long coat, take her to a groomer once every few months for a “professional” touch;
    • trim her nails once a month, or when it’s needed;
    • bath her once every two months;
    • clean her ears once a week;
    • brush her teeth three or four times a week.

Use these moments to play with your dog. Activities like brushing or bathing can help you bond, as you have the chance to spend some more time together.

A hyper dog needs an active owner

Pitbull Chihuahua Mix A Chipit has high energy levels, and she needs to exercise regularly to stay healthy and fit. Take her for two 30-minute walks each day and make some time for at least one play session. She’ll also enjoy a trip to the dog park from time to time. Protect your dog from bad weather, as neither of her parents likes staying out in the wet or the cold.

Besides physical training she also needs mental stimulation. This dog is very intelligent and she can easily get bored when there’s nothing to keep her interest. Provide your dog with high-quality dog toys, and keep her busy with entertaining training sessions and games.

With enough exercise each day, your dog will be happy in a house of any size, with or without a yard. However, if you keep her inside most of the day, organize a playpen where she can stay away from electric cables, shoes, and other similar objects that she might try and chew.

Owning a Chipit can be expensive

Many breeders sell these dogs as rare ones, so you’ll probably have to pay a few hundred dollars for a puppy coming from a reputable breeder. Then you’ll spend about $2,000 for things like a crate, spaying/neutering, vaccinations and other one-time expenses.

According to the American Kennel Club, your dog will cost you between $2,600 and $2,800 a year, once your dog is an adult. Multiply that by 12, which is the estimated life span of a Chipit, and you’ll have an idea about the possible costs.

Besides these expenses, you should consider looking for pet medical insurance. Usually these dogs are pretty healthy, but the list of possible hereditary diseases is longer than that for most other breeds, and includes:

  • hypothyroidism;
  • hypoglycemia;
  • heart problems;
  • allergies;
  • asthma;
  • shivering;
  • hip dysplasia.

Medical insurance for your dog will add between $200 and $700 a year, depending on her age and the type of coverage you’re choosing.

Conclusion

If you have a lot of time to spend with a dog, then a Pitbull Chihuahua Mix is the best choice for you. She’ll be happy to play and follow you everywhere. I guess this can’t go wrong, as long as you train her properly and keep her safe when you can’t watch her over.

    When I got my dog , he was a rescue and only about 3 months old. The Vet told me he was a chihuahua/terrier mix… Occasionally he would act a bit aggressive towards other people, but he did seem to get along with the “bigger” dogs. I would joke about him being a pi-hua-hua (pit bull and chihuahua mix) Always kinda wondered what kind of terrier,he was because he did not look like any typical small terrier breed I had seen before.

    When I saw the pictures of dogs that look like him for this article,I knew right away I had been right all along. With that sweet chihuahua face, the broad chest and the powerful legs, who could resist such a little (15-16 llbs) rascal. Not sure if it is because he was a rescue or the master;s loyal sidekick, but he does not like to be separated from me for great lengths of time-for him that means on opposite sides of a door. What I have noticed is that he prefers burrowing in soft blankets. He is not too keen about new people, but once he gets to know them he takes ownership of them, has gotten eek a with 99% of the dogs he has met.

    On a side note, he seems to be allergic to cat fleas and he had a reaction to a vaccine once. This past Fall, I almost thought I was going to lose him because of some intestinal blockage. Thankfully he pulled out of that without surgery. He does have some powerful back legs though. Being so little he can jump into my arms without me bending over to pick him up. He is generally well behaved when we are home together.

    We do have some awsome play sessions. When he was younger, he would end up jumping for a rope toy I was holding and in mid air try to pull the rope away from me. Using his really strong neck muscles he could pull downwards, it took both hands to hold the rope when he would do this. He isn’t so rambunctious now, he is coming up on 7 years of age and just wants to sleep all day. Since the intestinal scare we stopped feeding him people food. So now he is gaining weight and will be getting a thorough check-up in a few weeks

    I have a chipit that I got from a rescue when she was just 8 weeks old. So pretty. She’s is almost 11 months old now. She has bug trust issues with everyone but me. She’s very stand offish but will warm up a little bit to others if they take it slow.
    She was extremely hard to potty train. Only took until she was almost 8 months old and SHE decided she didn’t want to potty in the house anymore.
    She snuggles with me on the couch, sleeps under the blankets with me and is literally my shadow everywhere I go. She also loves to go for car rides.
    She’s rather short, standing maybe 15 inches tall and weighs probably 10-12 pounds.

    Just adopted a chipit three months ago from our local shelter. Never heard of this mix’s before. She is now 6 months old and looks like a mini pit, very active, smart and yes a 30lb lap dog. Very strong. She does not like to be home alone. Wish I could post a picture of her. Pure white with black eyes

    We found the perfect rescue dog. Bongo is between two to three years old, and is 54% pitbull and 46% Chihuahua. He is full of energy, extremely smart, great with kids of all ages, and has not had a negative behavior with any dog. He needs lots of walks and playtime and is so affectionate. He weighs 30 lbs and is such a good boy!

    I got my chipit by accidental good luck. A neighbor across the street had a beautiful blue pitbull terrier. She had the shape of a greyhound, but of course heavier. Animal control came by one day to take away the 12 pup litter and destroy them. They missed one pup and I grabbed her. She is now almost 11 years old and is the best dog I’ve ever had out of some dozen dogs. She is the smartest and sweetest dog I’ve ever had. She is about 14 in. tall and weighs 18 lbs. She looks like a larger tan Chihuahua with muscles. I call her Rosie. She housebroke herself and loves everyone. She seems to know almost every thing I tell her. Only one odd thing, she hates riding in a car. I feed her wet dogfood and give her half a can in the morning and another half in the evening. I love her to death. Sorry for the long post. I’m just proud of her.

    I have an amstaff pit bull terrier and I’m currently homeless and about a month ago or so she was molested at my tent and she was in heat. while I was away trying to charge my phone and a person I knew took advantage of my baby and got on his knees to mate his Chihuahua (jack) with my boo without my permission! Just wrong I still feel violated And they weren’t stuck together when I came back and caught him! Now she’s pregnant and I’m pissed well I was before I found out that they won’t be ugly and it’s a real thing! People do the most messed up stuff I kicked his ass the following week I’m outside why would you make my life harder than it is. And now she’s losing weight can someone recommend some thing that can help get her weight back up? While she’s going thru this?

    Hey.

    So I rescued this Pihuahua or Chipit from a lady who abused her. Her name was Princess. I changed it cause everytime I would say that word she would shake and literally have tears running out her eyes. So I took to calling her Margie Samantha. Margie is what came to mind when I saw her and got her home and cleaned up. Samantha came from the Character “Samantha” from Sex and the City.” She has more attitude and she is sassy. She is an amazing dog though. For my first experience with this type of chihuahua mix, it’s going great! She gets along with her mate Christopher Chase – Chihuahua/Dachshund mix. They play constantly. There have been a few accidents but overall an amazing crossbreed.
